THE GREEN BELT

Koli is located on the Green Belt in eastern Finland. The Fennoscandian Green Belt refers to the area between Finland’s eastern border in Ilomantsi to Kainuu. If both sides are considered, the 1,250 kilometre long border shared by Finland and Russia contains a million hectares worth of nature conservation areas.

In its totality the Green Belt is a network of woods, swamps and mountains shared by Finland, Russia and Norway that reaches from The Gulf of Finland to the Arctic Ocean. It is the largest belt in all of Western Europe and the most important area of original nature. The Green Belt is also an opportunity for dynamic and sustainable use and protection of nature.
